Thou makest vs a strife vnto our neighbours: and our enemies laugh among themselues. Psalms 80:6 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 80 is attributed to Asaph and is a communal lament, likely written during a time of distress for the people of Israel. It focuses on the metaphor of a vineyard and portrays Israel as a vine that has been uprooted and destroyed. In verse 6, the psalmist acknowledges that God has made them a source of contention and ridicule among their neighboring nations. The psalmist laments that Israel has become a subject of strife due to God’s action. The psalmist goes on to express that Israel’s enemies laugh and mock them among themselves. This suggests that Israel’s adversaries take pleasure in seeing the nation weakened or humiliated. The laughter of the enemies emphasizes the humiliation and the sense of Israel’s vulnerability in their current situation. By acknowledging their strife with neighbors and the ridicule from their enemies, the psalmist is recognizing the dire state of Israel. They are facing challenges and adversity, both externally and internally. The psalmist is appealing to God for deliverance and restoration, as subsequent verses in Psalm 80 reveal. The psalmist’s words remind us that disobedience to God’s laws and principles can lead to strife and discord with others. When we deviate from God’s path, we may experience strained relationships and become a target for ridicule. It serves as a cautionary reminder to seek God’s guidance and follow His ways to avoid unnecessary conflicts. Despite the difficult circumstances, the psalmist still directs their plea to God. This demonstrates the importance of turning to God in times of trouble. We can find solace and strength by entrusting our struggles to Him, knowing that He is capable of providing deliverance and vindication. While this verse depicts a gloomy situation for Israel, the overall theme of Psalm 80 is a plea for restoration and revival. It reminds us that no matter how dire our circumstances may appear, we can find hope in God’s faithfulness. God is able to transform our situations and bring about healing, reconciliation, and victory.
