Psalms 80:13

The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.

Psalms 80:13 (KJV)

Psalm 80 is a communal lament, a sacred song in which the people of Israel cry out to God during a time of national distress, possibly invasion or exile. The psalmist pleads for God’s restoration and deliverance. Earlier in the psalm, Israel is pictured as a vine that God brought out of Egypt and planted. In verse 12, God has broken down the vineyard’s walls, leaving it exposed. Verse 13 then describes the devastating results: the boar from the forest and the wild beasts of the field ravage and devour the vine.

The “boar out of the wood” and the “wild beast of the field” are vivid images of powerful, destructive forces. The boar, an animal that lives in forests and wastes fields and vineyards, and the wild beast, a predator from the open country, together symbolize relentless assault from every direction. They represent the enemies of Israel—invading nations, oppressive rulers, or spiritual forces of evil—that threaten to consume God’s people. The imagery conveys chaos, danger, and devastation, painting a picture of a people left vulnerable and ravaged.

Some commentators see specific historical enemies in these images. The boar may represent Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, who carried the ten tribes into captivity, while the wild beast may represent Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, who carried away the two remaining tribes. Others interpret the boar as Antiochus Epiphanes or as the fourth beast of Daniel 7:7, which represents the Roman empire. These interpretations are uncertain, but they all point to the same truth: Israel faced powerful, destructive foes.

The verse underscores the consequences of sin and the reality of divine judgment. The destruction of the vineyard is a direct result of Israel’s disobedience and turning away from God. Throughout the psalm, the writer acknowledges the nation’s waywardness and pleads for forgiveness, mercy, and renewal. The passage serves as a reminder that neglecting God’s ways leads to dire consequences, while sincere repentance opens the way to restoration.

Though the original context concerns Israel, the principles apply to believers today. The verse urges vigilance, faithfulness, and a continual turning away from sin. It highlights the need for spiritual discernment and the importance of seeking God’s guidance to guard against forces that would threaten our relationship with Him. Just as the vineyard was exposed when its walls were broken, so our lives become vulnerable when we drift from God’s protection.

Christians see a foreshadowing of Christ in this verse. Jesus, the Messiah, came to deliver humanity from the power of sin, death, and spiritual adversaries. He conquered the destructive forces that seek to devour us, offering refuge, restoration, and eternal security to all who trust in Him. Psalm 80:13 provides powerful imagery of destruction and a heartfelt cry for God’s deliverance. It reminds us of the consequences of disobedience, the necessity of repentance, and the hope of restoration that comes through faith in God. Believers can find assurance in Jesus Christ, who defeats the forces of sin and grants eternal salvation.
