So persecute them with thy tempest: and make them afraid with thy storme. Psalms 83:15 (KJV)

Psalm 83 is a prayer for deliverance and judgment against the enemies of God’s people. It describes a time when various nations and groups conspire to destroy Israel, and the psalmist calls upon God to intervene and bring about their defeat and judgment.

The psalmist implores God to “persecute them with thy tempest.” This signifies a strong desire for God to actively engage in the enemies’ lives and bring about their downfall, implying that the enemies are deserving of judgment because of their actions against God’s people. The use of “tempest” and “storm” is metaphorical, conveying the intensity and force with which the psalmist wants God to act. These natural elements symbolize God’s power and authority, capable of overwhelming and frightening the enemies.

The psalmist further requests that God “make them afraid with thy storm.” The intention is not merely to defeat the enemies but also to instill fear in them. This fear serves as a consequence of their actions and a reminder of God’s sovereignty, and it reflects the psalmist’s desire for a profound display of God’s might to discourage future aggression against His people.

The plea for divine intervention reveals a deep trust in God’s righteousness and an understanding that He will defend His people. The psalmist acknowledges that human efforts alone may not be sufficient to overcome the threat, but he relies on God’s power and justice to bring about deliverance.

As believers, we can find encouragement in the psalmist’s faith and confidence in God’s ability to protect and defend His people. In times of trouble or opposition, we should place our trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing He has the power to act on our behalf. Psalm 83:15 teaches that it is acceptable to bring our concerns and fears before God and ask for His intervention, praying for justice against those who seek to harm us while aligning our hearts with God’s will rather than personal vengeance.

The imagery of tempest and storm reminds us of God’s authority over nature and the awe‑inspiring nature of His power. It underscores His holiness and serves as a reminder of His ability to bring about justice and judgment. We can worship and revere God for His mighty acts and recognize His ability to intervene in our lives. Overall, Psalm 83:15 conveys the psalmist’s plea for divine intervention and justice against the enemies of God’s people, highlighting trust in God’s power and willingness to defend His children, and urging readers to rely on His sovereignty, seek justice, and trust in His ability to deliver us from our adversaries.
