Psalms 83:16

Listen to this article

“Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD.”

Context:Psalm 83 is a prayer of the psalmist, expressing a plea for God’s intervention and deliverance against enemies who are conspiring against Israel. The psalmist acknowledges that the enemies of God’s people have formed an alliance and seeks God’s righteous judgment upon them.

Symbolism:In this verse, the psalmist prays for shame to fill the faces of their enemies. The face is often symbolic of one’s identity, reputation, and honour. By asking God to fill their faces with shame, the psalmist is invoking a plea for their enemies to be humiliated and exposed for their evil deeds.

Motivation for Shame:The psalmist desires that their enemies experience shame with the hope that it would lead them to seek God’s name. This demonstrates a desire for the enemies to recognise their own wickedness and turn to the Lord in repentance. It is not a vindictive desire for revenge, but rather a longing for the enemies to come to know the true God and abandon their wicked ways.

God’s Righteous Judgment:The psalmist recognises that it is ultimately God who will bring about the desired outcome. By asking God to fill their enemies’ faces with shame, they acknowledge that God is the one who has the power and authority to judge and bring about justice. The psalmist trusts in God’s righteousness and ability to address the situation.

Application:While this psalm is specifically referring to the enemies of Israel, we can draw broader principles from it. It teaches us to pray for the exposure of wickedness, the humbling of those who oppose God’s ways, and the desire for people to turn to God in repentance. We should pray for justice, relying on God’s righteous judgment to prevail in all situations.

  • It is important to note that the Bible contains a range of literary styles and expressions, and this verse should be understood within its historical and cultural context. The intent of this verse is not to promote vindictiveness or personal vengeance, but rather to seek God’s justice and the transformation of hearts.

Remember, studying the Bible in its entirety and considering the surrounding verses and broader themes is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of its message.
