Psalms 84:4
“Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.”
Context:This verse is part of Psalm 84, which is attributed to the sons of Korah.
The psalm is a song of longing for the presence of God and the joy of worshiping Him. It expresses a deep desire to be in the house of the Lord, where His presence dwells.
The Blessing of Dwelling in God’s House:The psalmist begins by declaring the blessedness of those who dwell in God’s house. In the Old Testament context, the house of God refers to the temple, where the people would come to worship and offer sacrifices. It was the central place of worship and symbolized God’s presence among His people. The psalmist recognizes the privilege and blessing of being able to abide in God’s house, being in close proximity to His presence.
Continuous Praise:The psalmist further explains that those who dwell in God’s house will be “still praising” Him. This suggests that they will continuously offer praise and worship to God. Their hearts are filled with gratitude and adoration, and their lives are characterized by a constant expression of praise. Dwelling in God’s house allows for an unbroken connection with Him, leading to a lifestyle of worship.
Selah:The verse concludes with the word “Selah,” which is a musical term found throughout the Psalms. Its exact meaning is uncertain, but it likely indicates a pause or musical interlude, providing an opportunity for reflection and meditation on the preceding words. In this case, it allows the reader to ponder the blessedness of dwelling in God’s house and the continuous praise that accompanies it.
- Psalm 84:4 encourages believers to long for the presence of God and to prioritise worship in their lives. While the temple is no longer the central place of worship in the New Testament era, we can apply this verse in a spiritual sense. As Christians, we are now the dwelling place of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We have direct access to God’s presence through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:16). Therefore, we should cultivate a heart of praise and worship, recognising the blessing of being in a close relationship with God.
Additionally, this verse reminds us that our praise and worship should not be limited to a specific time or place. It should be a continuous expression of gratitude and adoration in our daily lives. Just as the psalmist aspired to be in the physical house of God, we should aspire to dwell in God’s presence through a life dedicated to Him, offering praises in all circumstances.
In summary, Psalm 84:4 speaks of the blessedness of dwelling in God’s house and the continuous praise that accompanies such dwelling. It encourages believers to prioritise worship and seek a close relationship with God, acknowledging the privilege of being in His presence.
