Psalms 85:8

Listen to this article

“I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.”

Context:Psalm 85 is a prayer for restoration and revival. The psalmist acknowledges God’s past favor and forgiveness, and now seeks renewal and the restoration of God’s blessings for the nation of Israel.

The verse begins with the psalmist expressing a desire to hear what God will speak. It reflects a posture of attentiveness and expectation, showing a willingness to listen to God’s words. As believers, we should also cultivate a heart that seeks to hear from God and receive His guidance in our lives.

The psalmist affirms that when God speaks, He speaks peace. God’s message to His people is characterized by peace, reconciliation, and restoration. This demonstrates God’s loving nature, as He desires to bring harmony and wholeness to His people.

The verse mentions two groups: “his people” and “his saints.” In the context of the Old Testament, “his people” refers to the nation of Israel, the chosen people of God. “His saints” likely refers to those who are faithful and devoted to God, the righteous individuals who have set themselves apart for His purposes. In the New Testament, “saints” can include all believers who have been sanctified and set apart by faith in Jesus Christ.

The psalmist concludes with a cautionary note, urging the people not to turn back to folly. This highlights the importance of heeding God’s voice and instructions, rather than returning to sinful ways and unwise choices. It reminds believers of the need for obedience and faithfulness in response to God’s message of peace.

  • Seek God’s voice:Like the psalmist, develop a habit of listening to God through prayer, meditation on Scripture, and seeking His guidance in all aspects of life.
  • Embrace God’s peace:Recognize that when God speaks, His words bring peace and restoration. Trust in His loving nature and rely on His promises of peace in the midst of challenges.
  • Live in obedience:Take the caution against folly seriously and strive to live in alignment with God’s will. Avoid returning to sinful patterns and instead choose a life of righteousness, following God’s guidance.
