Surely his saluation is nigh them that feare him; that glory may dwell in our land. Psalms 85:9 (KJV)

Surely his salvation

is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. Psalms 85:9 (KJV)

Psalm 85, attributed to the Sons of Korah, is a heartfelt plea for restoration, forgiveness, and the renewal of God’s favor upon Israel. The psalmist recalls God’s past mercies and earnestly seeks His continued grace and salvation. The verse affirms that God’s salvation is near to those who fear Him. In this context, “salvation” encompasses deliverance from adversity, restoration of relationship, and the experience of divine favor.

The “fear of God” spoken of here is not terror but a deep reverence, awe, and respect for His majesty, holiness, and authority. It is a recognition of His sovereignty that leads believers to obedience. Such reverence cultivates a close relationship with God, through which His guidance, protection, and blessings are tangibly experienced.

The phrase “that glory may dwell in our land” points to the manifest presence of God—the splendor of His attributes revealed among His people. When God’s glory inhabits a community, it brings peace, righteousness, prosperity, and overall well‑being. The psalmist understands that true national restoration depends on the dwelling of God’s glory.

Application for today is clear.

First, the promise that salvation is near encourages believers to trust in God’s faithfulness, especially when they honor Him with reverent fear. Second, cultivating a healthy fear of God—recognizing His holiness and living obediently—positions us to receive His guidance and protection. Finally, seeking God’s glory in our lives invites His transformative presence, resulting in personal and communal blessing, restoration, and renewed purpose.

In summary, Psalm 85:9 links the reverent fear of God with the nearness of His salvation and the indwelling of His glorious presence. When we honor God, we can confidently expect His saving work and the transformative power of His glory to bring lasting blessings.
