Listen to this article

O God, the proud are risen against mee, and the assemblies of violent men haue sought after my soule: and haue not set thee before them. Psalms 86:14 (KJV)

Historical Context: Psalm 86 is attributed to King David and is classified as a prayer of David. It is a heartfelt cry to God for mercy, help, and protection. While the specific historical context is unclear, David often faced opposition from enemies and adversaries throughout his life, which could be the inspiration behind this psalm.

Understanding the Verse:

“The proud are risen against me”: The psalmist acknowledges that the proud, or arrogant, individuals have risen against him, perhaps boasting in their own strength or seeking to undermine or harm him because of their prideful motivations.

“The assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul”: Not only the proud but also violent individuals have gathered together against the psalmist, aggressively pursuing his life and seeking to cause him harm.

“And have not set thee before them”: The enemies do not acknowledge or fear God; they disregard divine authority and lack reverence for God’s presence and guidance.

(Note: The quoted passage is drawn from Psalm 86; verse numbering varies among translations, so it is not specifically Psalm 86:14 in the King James Version.)

Spiritual Insights:

Trusting in God’s Protection: The psalmist’s plea implies deep trust in God’s ability to provide refuge and defense in times of trouble. This verse reminds believers to turn to God when facing opposition and danger, placing their trust in His power to deliver them.

The Arrogance of the Proud: The proud are often self‑reliant and dismissive of God’s authority. Their arrogance blinds them to the consequences of their actions, leading them to oppress and harm others. The verse serves as a cautionary reminder to avoid prideful attitudes.

God’s Righteous Judgment: Although the psalmist is distressed by the violence and pride of his enemies, he recognizes that God sees all things. Even when the wicked seem to prosper, they will ultimately be held accountable before God, encouraging believers to have faith in His justice and to patiently await His timing.

Application:

Seeking God’s Protection: Like the psalmist, believers can turn to God when facing opposition or danger, earnestly seeking His help, knowing He is the ultimate refuge and strength.

Humility and Reverence: The verse calls for cultivating a humble and reverent attitude toward God. By acknowledging His authority and seeking His guidance, one can avoid falling into prideful behavior.

Trusting in God’s Justice: Even when it appears that the wicked prevail, believers should trust in God’s righteousness and judgment, confident that He will bring about justice and hold each person accountable.

In summary, Psalm 86 reflects the psalmist’s plea for God’s protection against proud and violent individuals. It reminds us to seek God’s help, maintain humility and reverence before Him, and trust in His justice.
