1. Context:Psalm 86 is attributed to King David and is a prayer for help and deliverance. In this verse, David humbly asks the Lord to listen to his plea because he recognizes his own limitations and dependency on God.

2. Bow down thine ear, O Lord:This phrase reflects a posture of reverence and submission. David acknowledges the greatness of God and his need for divine intervention. It shows David’s humility and recognizes God’s sovereignty and willingness to hear the prayers of His people.

3. Hear me:David appeals to God’s attentive and compassionate nature. He desires God’s active engagement in his situation. David expresses his trust in God’s ability to hear and respond to his prayers.

4. For I am poor and needy:Here, David acknowledges his own weakness and insufficiency. He recognizes his need for God’s provision and help. This statement also reflects a spiritual attitude of dependence on God, acknowledging that without Him, we are spiritually impoverished and in need of His grace and mercy.

  • a. Humility:David’s posture of bowing down and acknowledging his need for God teaches us the importance of humility in prayer. Approaching God with humility recognizes His authority and our dependence on Him.
  • b. Confidence in God’s hearing:David’s assurance that God will hear him encourages us to have faith and confidence that God listens to our prayers as well. We can approach Him boldly, knowing that He is attentive and compassionate toward His children.
  • c. Dependency on God:David’s admission of his own poverty and neediness reminds us of our own spiritual poverty and reliance on God’s provision. It teaches us to rely on God for our every need and to seek His help and guidance in all circumstances.

Application:Psalm 86:1 encourages us to approach God with humility, confidence, and dependency. We should come before Him in prayer, recognizing His greatness, acknowledging our own limitations, and trusting in His ability to provide for our needs. As we seek God’s help, may we grow in humility, deepen our trust in His hearing, and rely on Him for our every need.
