Psalms 85:13

Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

Context

Psalm 85 is a prayer for God’s forgiveness and restoration, attributed to the sons of Korah. The people remember God’s past favor and ask Him to revive them again. This verse closes the psalm with a confident picture of God’s righteousness leading His people forward.

Meaning

“Righteousness shall go before him” means that God’s perfect moral character and justice prepare the way for His coming. The word “him” refers to God Himself. His righteousness is not passive; it actively moves ahead of Him, clearing the path for His saving work.

The second part, “and shall set us in the way of his steps,” shows that God’s righteousness also places His people on the right path. It does not merely show the way from a distance; it sets us firmly in that way. God’s righteousness both leads and establishes us, so we can walk in obedience and security.

This verse echoes the promise that God leads His people in paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:3).
