Listen to this article

“Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”

Context:Psalm 86 is attributed to David and is classified as a prayer of supplication or a psalm of David’s distress. In this psalm, David appeals to God for mercy and deliverance from his enemies. Verse 10 appears in the middle of this psalm.

Teach me thy way, O Lord:David begins this verse by acknowledging his desire to learn and follow God’s ways. He recognizes that he needs divine guidance and instruction. This expresses humility and a willingness to submit to God’s wisdom and direction.

I will walk in thy truth:David expresses his commitment to living according to God’s truth. This indicates that he not only desires to gain knowledge but also intends to put it into practice. David’s statement reflects his determination to align his actions and conduct with the principles and precepts of God’s Word.

Unite my heart to fear thy name:Here, David prays for a unified heart or an undivided loyalty to God. He wants his heart to be fully devoted to honoring and revering God’s name. David recognizes that the fear of the Lord, which signifies a deep reverence and respect for God, is essential in maintaining a right relationship with Him.

  • Seeking God’s Way:David’s prayer teaches us the importance of seeking God’s way and instruction. We should have a teachable spirit, acknowledging our need for God’s wisdom, and relying on Him to show us the right path.
  • Walking in God’s Truth:David’s declaration reflects the significance of aligning our lives with God’s truth. It involves not only acquiring knowledge of God’s Word but also applying it in our daily lives, allowing His truth to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.
  • A Unified Heart:David’s plea for a united heart demonstrates the desire to have a singular devotion to God. It reminds us of the need to prioritize God above all else and to guard against divided loyalties or distractions that may hinder our wholehearted commitment to Him.

Overall, Psalm 86:10 encourages us to seek God’s guidance, walk in His truth, and cultivate a unified heart that fears and honors His name. It is a reminder of our continual dependence on God and our desire to live in accordance with His ways.
