Psalms 89:33
Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.
Psalms 89:33 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 89 is a royal psalm attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite. It reflects on God’s covenant with David and the enduring nature of God’s faithfulness. The word “nevertheless” signals a contrast with the preceding verse, where God warns of punishing transgression with the rod and stripes (Psalm 89:32). Despite such discipline, God promises not to utterly withdraw His lovingkindness from David or his descendants, nor allow His faithfulness to fail.
Meaning
“Lovingkindness” refers to God’s steadfast love and mercy toward His people. “Utterly take” means God will not completely remove His lovingkindness. “Suffer” implies God will not permit His faithfulness to fail. This verse emphasizes God’s unchanging love and unfailing faithfulness, even amidst human failings and divine discipline.
Biblical connections
The immediate context continues in verse 34, where God declares He will not break His covenant or alter what has gone out of His lips, reinforcing the permanence of His promise. Some commentators see the “him” as referring ultimately to Christ, the beloved Son, and to all believers who are in Him, for God’s love is in Christ and cannot be separated from His people. This understanding aligns with the broader biblical theme that God’s covenant promises find their fulfillment in Christ.
Application
Trust in God’s love: remember that God’s love for you is steadfast and enduring. Even when you fail or face difficulties, His love remains unchanged. Rely on God’s faithfulness: when you encounter challenging situations, trust in God’s faithfulness to bring you through. His promises are reliable, and He will never abandon you. Embrace the covenant: as a believer, you are part of the new covenant established through Jesus Christ. Rest in the assurance that God’s covenant with you is unbreakable, securing your salvation and blessings.
Reflection
God’s discipline is not a sign of rejection but of His faithful love. His mercy is new every morning, and His faithfulness reaches to the skies. In times of failure, we can find comfort in knowing that God’s lovingkindness is never utterly taken from us.
