Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

Psalm 89 is a lament attributed to Ethan the Ezrahite. It opens with praise for God’s faithfulness and steadfast love toward David, celebrating the covenant made with him and his descendants. The question about God’s former lovingkindnesses comes after verses 46-48, which speak of life’s brevity and death’s certainty, making the plea urgent.

Meaning

The phrase “former lovingkindnesses” points to the steadfast love and mercy God showed to David and his line. The Hebrew word for lovingkindness is closely tied to covenant faithfulness, so the psalmist is not doubting God’s character but pleading for Him to act on His sworn word. The question “where are” expresses deep longing for restored favor when current troubles seem to contradict the covenant. This is an honest cry of faith, not unbelief, because it appeals to God’s own promise.

Biblical connections

The covenant God made with David in 2 Samuel 7:8-16 promised an everlasting dynasty, and that promise undergirds this plea.
