Psalms 89:9
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.
Psalms 89:9 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 89 is a lament written by Ethan the Ezrahite. The psalmist struggles with the tension between God’s covenant with David and the painful situation of his people. In the middle of this sorrow, he remembers God’s power over creation. This verse is part of a larger song that praises God’s faithfulness even when circumstances seem to contradict His promises.
Meaning
The sea in this verse stands for chaos, turmoil, and the forces that seem beyond human control. Its “raging” is its pride and swelling power, threatening to destroy. Yet God rules over it. He does not merely watch; He actively stills the waves when they rise. This shows His absolute authority over everything that frightens us.
The Hebrew word for “raging” also carries the idea of the sea’s pride and elation. The sea boasts and swells, but the Lord restrains it. He assigned the sea its place at creation and set the sand as its boundary. His control is not passive but active and personal. He is not distant from the storm; He commands it.
Biblical connections
This verse directly connects to Jesus Christ. In Matthew 8:23-27, Jesus calms a storm on the Sea of Galilee with a command. His disciples marvel that even the winds and sea obey Him. This shows that Jesus shares the same divine power that Psalm 89:9 attributes to God. The God who stills the sea in the Old Testament is the same Lord who stills the storm in the New Testament. His authority over creation is unchanging.
Application
When life feels like a raging sea, this verse invites us to trust God’s control. Our circumstances may swell and threaten to overwhelm us, but God is not distant. He sees the waves and can bring stillness. We can turn to Him in prayer, surrendering our fears and anxieties, knowing that He is able to calm what we cannot. This truth gives us a firm place to stand when everything around us shakes.
God’s power over the sea is a promise of His power over our trials.
His stillness is not weakness but perfect authority.
We find peace not by controlling our storms but by trusting the One who rules them.
Reflection
This verse calls us to worship. The psalmist praises God for His mighty acts, and we can do the same. When we remember that God rules the raging sea, our hearts can rest. He is faithful, and His power is our refuge. No wave is too high for Him to still, and no chaos is beyond His command. Let this truth lead you to praise Him today.
