Psalms 90:1

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.”

1. Background: Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, the great leader and prophet of Israel. It is the only psalm in the Book of Psalms that is specifically ascribed to him. The psalm reflects on the eternal nature of God and the transient nature of human life.

2. Understanding the Verse:

a. “Lord”: The psalm begins by addressing God as the Lord. This title emphasizes His sovereignty, authority, and covenant relationship with His people.

b. “Thou hast been”: This phrase refers to God’s consistent and continuous presence and care for His people throughout the generations.

c. “Our dwelling place”: Here, the psalmist acknowledges that God is the abode, refuge, and source of security for His people. He is the One in whom they find shelter, rest, and comfort.

3. Key Themes:

a. God’s Eternality: The psalmist recognizes God’s eternal nature and contrasts it with the brevity of human life. God transcends time and is not limited by it.

b. God’s Faithfulness: Throughout the generations, God has been faithful to His people. He has provided them with a place of refuge and safety.

c. Human Transience: The psalmist acknowledges the transient nature of human existence. In contrast to God’s eternal nature, humans are frail, finite, and subject to the passage of time.

4. Application:

a. Seeking Refuge in God: Just as the Israelites found refuge in God, we too can seek Him as our dwelling place. In times of uncertainty and instability, we can find comfort and security in His presence.

b. Recognizing God’s Faithfulness: Reflecting on God’s faithfulness throughout history can encourage us in our own lives. We can trust that God will continue to be with us and provide for us in every generation.

c. Embracing the Eternal Perspective: Remembering the brevity of our lives can inspire us to live with an eternal perspective. We can focus on what truly matters, seeking to invest in things that have lasting value and align with God’s purposes.

5. Additional Scriptures:

  • a. Psalm 91:1-2 (KJV): “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
  • b. Isaiah 40:28 (KJV): “Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding.”
