Psalms 90:2
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
1. Historical Context: Psalm 90 is attributed to Moses, the great leader of Israel. It is the only psalm directly attributed to him. The psalm reflects on the eternality of God and the frailty of humanity.
The verse begins by emphasizing God’s existence before the creation of the earth and the world. It highlights the transcendent nature of God, indicating that He predates the existence of everything we know. This highlights God’s sovereignty and His role as the Creator.
The verse continues to affirm that God is from everlasting to everlasting. This statement underscores the eternal nature of God. He is not bound by time or limited by its constraints. God exists outside of time, and His existence stretches infinitely in both directions. This concept emphasizes His immutability and unchanging nature.
Psalm 90:2 reminds us of the greatness and majesty of God. It helps us grasp the vast difference between the eternal Creator and His finite creation. Recognizing God’s eternal nature can bring comfort and assurance, knowing that our lives and circumstances are held within the hands of an everlasting God who is above and beyond our temporal world.
