Psalms 90:4

For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

Psalms 90:4 (KJV)

Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, the man of God, and the only psalm attributed to him. It reflects on God’s eternal nature, the frailty of human life, and the need for wisdom from God.

Moses compares a thousand years to “yesterday when it is past” and to “a watch in the night.” A night watch was a brief period of three to four hours, showing how fleeting a thousand years are to God. The phrase “in thy sight” means this is God’s own estimation of time, not a poetic exaggeration. For God, a thousand years are like a single day that has already gone.

This comparison emphasizes that God exists outside the limits of time. Humans are bound by days and years, but God transcends them. His perspective is not constrained by the passing of time. Even if a man lived a thousand years, which no one ever has, that span would still be as yesterday with God.

The Apostle Peter uses the same truth in 2 Peter 3:8 to answer those who doubted Christ’s return because it seemed delayed. He explains that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. This connection shows that God’s patience and timing are not like ours.

This truth also addresses the difficulty of resurrection. Some might object that people have been in the grave for thousands of years, but in God’s sight that time is short. Length of time is no obstacle to God’s power to raise the dead. Isaiah 43:13 reinforces this by declaring that God is from eternity and none can deliver out of His hand.

Recognizing the brevity of life should lead us to humility. Our lives are brief and fragile compared to God’s eternity. We should seek God’s wisdom and guidance in navigating the uncertainties of life, and use our time wisely to align our lives with His purposes.

God’s unchanging nature assures us of His faithfulness. While time brings change and decay, God remains constant. This verse invites us to trust His eternal perspective, even when we cannot see the whole picture.
