Psalms 91:14
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
Psalms 91:14 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 91 is a song of trust in God’s protection. It promises safety to those who make the Lord their refuge. Verse 14 is the climax, where God himself speaks directly. He declares what he will do for the person who loves him and knows his name.
Meaning
The verse opens with “Because he hath set his love upon me.” This is not a passing feeling. It is a deliberate, personal commitment to God. The Hebrew picture is of clinging to God with affection and devotion, not merely obeying out of duty. This love is the foundation for everything that follows.
God responds, “therefore will I deliver him.” Deliverance means rescue from danger, trouble, or harm. It is a firm promise from God. He commits himself to save those who are devoted to him.
Then God says, “I will set him on high.” This means placing the person in a secure, elevated position. It speaks of safety from enemies below and honor before others. God lifts up those who trust him, giving them a place of protection and dignity.
The final phrase is “because he hath known my name.” In the Bible, knowing a name means knowing the person’s character and nature. This is not just knowing facts about God. It is an intimate, experiential knowledge gained through relationship, prayer, and walking with him.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the covenant pattern found throughout Scripture. God promises to be with those who love him and keep his commands. The deliverance and exaltation here are the direct result of a personal relationship, not human effort. The whole psalm points to this truth: refuge in God leads to his faithful care.
Application
This verse calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we truly set our love upon God, or do we only turn to him in crisis? Knowing his name means spending time in his Word and in prayer, learning who he is. When we do this, we can trust his promise of deliverance and his lifting us up in his time.
Reflection
God’s promise here is personal and certain. He does not say “perhaps” or “maybe.” He says “I will.” This assurance invites us to rest in his care. We can respond with confident love, knowing that the God who knows us by name will never abandon those who set their hearts on him.
