“For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.”

Certainly!: Here is a Bible study on Psalm 96:4 (KJV):

Psalm 96:4 (KJV) says, “For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.” Let’s break down this verse and explore its meaning in context.

1. The Lord is great: This phrase emphasises the greatness and majesty of God. Throughout the Bible, we encounter numerous descriptions of God’s greatness, such as His power, wisdom, and sovereignty. It reminds us that God is above all things and deserving of our highest reverence and awe.

2. Greatly to be praised: The psalmist acknowledges that God is worthy of exuberant and heartfelt praise. This implies that praising God should be an integral part of our worship and spiritual life. When we recognise God’s greatness, it naturally leads us to express our adoration and thanksgiving to Him.

3. He is to be feared above all gods: This statement highlights the supremacy of the Lord over all other gods or idols. In the ancient world, people worshipped various deities, but the psalmist asserts that the Lord surpasses them all. It echoes the first commandment in Exodus 20:3, where God declares, “You shall have no other gods before me.” The fear mentioned here refers to a deep reverence and respect for God, recognising His authority and uniqueness.

Application:

a. Recognise God’s greatness: Take time to reflect on the greatness of God. Meditate on His attributes, such as His love, faithfulness, and power. Allow these thoughts to inspire awe and wonder in your heart.

b. Cultivate a lifestyle of praise: Let your life be marked by a spirit of praise and worship. Develop a habit of thanking and praising God throughout your day, not only in formal gatherings but also in your private moments.

c. Avoid idols and false gods: In our modern context, idols can take different forms, such as material possessions, fame, or success. Be vigilant to identify anything that competes with God’s rightful place in your life. Commit yourself to serve and worship the one true God.

d. Fear the Lord: Fear here doesn’t mean being scared, but rather recognising God’s authority and living in reverence towards Him. It involves aligning your thoughts, words, and actions with His will, knowing that He is sovereign and deserving of our utmost respect.

e. Share the greatness of God: As you experience God’s greatness in your life, share it with others. Let your testimony and words of praise be a witness to those around you, leading them to acknowledge and worship the one true God.
