Psalms 96:6

“Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.”

Context:Psalm 96 is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving to God. It calls for the nations to worship and acknowledge the greatness of the Lord. The psalm emphasizes the universal reign of God and His righteousness.

Honor and Majesty:The verse begins by stating that “honour and majesty are before him.” This phrase refers to the exalted nature and glory of God. It highlights the supreme authority and dignity that belong to Him alone. God is worthy of honour and respect because of His sovereignty, righteousness, and unmatched power.

Strength and Beauty:The verse continues by stating that “strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.” Here, the psalmist affirms two characteristics found within God’s sanctuary:

a. Strength: The term “strength” implies that God is mighty and powerful. It emphasizes His ability to protect, provide, and overcome any obstacle. God’s strength is not limited but infinite, and it is available to those who seek Him.

b. Beauty: The term “beauty” represents the aesthetic perfection and harmony found in God’s presence. It refers to the glorious and awe-inspiring attributes of God, such as His holiness, love, and grace. God’s beauty encompasses His character, creation, and the manifestation of His glory.

Sanctuary:The reference to God’s sanctuary signifies the sacred place where His presence dwells. In the Old Testament, the sanctuary was the physical place of worship, such as the Tabernacle or the Temple. However, in a broader sense, it can represent the realm of God’s presence, both in a physical location and in the hearts of believers.

  • Reverence and Worship:Psalm 96:6 reminds us of the importance of honoring and revering God. As believers, we are called to acknowledge His greatness, offer Him our worship, and recognize His authority over all things.
  • Seeking God’s Strength:When faced with challenges or difficulties, we can draw strength from God’s sanctuary. We can find refuge in His presence and rely on His power to sustain and empower us.
  • Appreciating God’s Beauty:God’s beauty can be seen in the world around us, as well as in His Word and His works. We can develop a deeper appreciation for His beauty by cultivating a sense of awe and wonder, recognizing the intricate details of His creation, and meditating on His attributes.
