Psalms 97:2

Listen to this article

“Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.”

Psalm 97:2 (KJV): Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.

Psalm 97 is a beautiful psalm that exalts and praises the sovereignty of God. Verse 2 specifically depicts the majestic presence of God and highlights two significant attributes: righteousness and judgment.

Clouds and Darkness:The verse begins by describing God as surrounded by clouds and darkness. This imagery signifies the divine mystery and transcendence of God’s presence. Clouds and darkness often symbolize the hiddenness and incomprehensibility of God. They indicate that God’s ways and thoughts are higher than ours, and we cannot fully grasp the depth of His wisdom and understanding (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Righteousness:The verse further emphasizes that righteousness is the habitation or foundation of God’s throne. Righteousness refers to God’s perfect moral character and adherence to justice and truth. It encompasses His faithfulness, goodness, and adherence to His own standards. The righteousness of God ensures that His judgments are just and fair (Psalm 89:14).

Judgment:The psalmist declares that judgment is also the habitation of God’s throne. This refers to God’s role as the ultimate judge who exercises righteous judgment. God’s judgments are based on truth and righteousness, and He brings justice to the world. His judgments are not swayed by personal bias or human limitations but are perfect and just (Psalm 9:7-8).

In summary, Psalm 97:2 presents a vivid portrayal of God’s sovereignty and attributes. The imagery of clouds and darkness emphasizes the mysterious and transcendent nature of God, while righteousness and judgment highlight His perfect character and role as the righteous judge. It reminds us that God is not only beyond our full comprehension but also the source of true justice and righteousness.
