The hilles melted like waxe at the presence of the Lord: at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. Psalms 97:5 (KJV)

Psalm 97 is a psalm of praise and exultation, declaring the majesty and sovereignty of God. It focuses on the power and glory of the Lord and the righteous judgment He brings. The psalm speaks of the earth rejoicing and the surrounding nations recognizing God’s supremacy.

In verse 5, it speaks of the hills melting like wax at the presence of the Lord. This vivid imagery emphasizes the overwhelming power of God’s presence. The hills, which are typically seen as stable and immovable, are depicted as melting away when confronted by the presence of the Lord.

The melting of the hills like wax symbolizes the complete subjugation and dissolution of anything that stands against the Lord. It illustrates the insignificance and transience of worldly powers and the ultimate triumph of God’s sovereignty.

The phrase “the Lord of the whole earth” emphasizes God’s dominion over all creation. It signifies that no part of the earth is beyond His control or authority. God’s presence is not limited to a specific location but extends throughout the entire earth.

Psalm 97:5 reminds us of the awe‑inspiring power and majesty of God. It encourages us to approach Him with reverence and humility, acknowledging His supreme authority over all creation. The verse also serves as a reminder that no obstacle or challenge is too great for God. Just as the hills melt at His presence, God can overcome any difficulty we face.

This verse, along with the entire psalm, invites us to worship and praise God for His greatness. It encourages us to celebrate His sovereignty, to acknowledge His presence in our lives, and to recognize that He alone is worthy of our devotion and adoration.
