Revelation 17:5

Listen to this article

“And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the Book of Revelation that describes the vision of the apostle John regarding the judgment of the great prostitute, referred to as “Babylon the Great.” To understand the meaning of this verse, it is important to consider the context of the entire chapter and the symbolic language used in the Book of Revelation.

The Book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic text that conveys prophetic messages about the end times and the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom. Many of its descriptions are symbolic and require careful interpretation. In this particular passage, Babylon the Great represents a powerful and corrupt system that opposes God and persecutes His people.

The mention of “MYSTERY” on the forehead of the woman signifies that there is a hidden meaning or significance to her identity and actions. The term “Mystery” is used in the New Testament to refer to divine truths or realities that were previously concealed but are now revealed through Christ (e.g., Ephesians 3:4-6). In this case, it suggests that Babylon the Great embodies a mysterious and deceptive force that operates contrary to God’s purposes.

The title “Babylon the Great” refers to a symbolic city or system that embodies spiritual and moral corruption. The use of the name Babylon harkens back to the historical city of Babylon, which was known for its wickedness and opposition to God in the Old Testament. In the context of Revelation, Babylon the Great represents a spiritual entity that influences the world with its immorality, idolatry, and false teachings.

Furthermore, the description of Babylon the Great as “the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth” indicates that she is the source or origin of corrupt practices and false religious systems. The term “harlots” here symbolizes spiritual adultery, which refers to the worship of false gods or idols instead of the one true God. The reference to “abominations of the earth” suggests that Babylon the Great promotes and perpetuates practices that are detestable in God’s sight.

Overall, Revelation 17:5 portrays Babylon the Great as a deceptive and corrupt system that opposes God and leads people astray. The identification of this system has been a subject of interpretation and debate among biblical scholars throughout history. Some interpret it as a symbol of a specific city or empire, while others view it more broadly as a representation of worldly powers and systems that oppose God’s kingdom.

It is important to approach the Book of Revelation with caution and humility, recognizing that its symbols and prophecies require careful interpretation. While the exact meaning of every detail may not be clear, the overall message of Revelation is that God is ultimately in control, and despite the opposition and persecution faced by His people, He will bring about the ultimate victory of His kingdom.
