Revelation 22:16

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Revelation 22:16 (KJV)

This verse comes from the closing chapter of Revelation, a book written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. The visions and prophetic messages recorded in Revelation were given to John by Jesus Christ, and here Jesus Himself speaks, affirming that He has sent His angel to testify these things to the churches. This underscores the divine authority and reliability of the entire revelation.

Identification of the speaker

Jesus is the speaker, and His words carry the weight of His divine commission. He has sent His angel to testify to the churches, ensuring that the message reaches its intended audience. This testifies to the careful, purposeful delivery of God’s revelation to His people.

Title: The root and the offspring of David

Jesus describes Himself as “the root and the offspring of David.” This title reveals His dual nature. As the root of David, Jesus is the source and originator of David’s line, the preexistent One who predates David and emphasizes His eternal, divine nature. As the offspring of David, Jesus is the human descendant who fulfills the messianic prophecies promising a king from David’s lineage who would rule forever. This title establishes Jesus’ authority and connects Him to the Davidic covenant.

The bright and morning star

Jesus further identifies Himself as “the bright and morning star.” This metaphorical language emphasizes His role as the source of divine illumination and guidance. The morning star is the brightest object in the sky before dawn, serving as a symbol of hope and a sign of the approaching day. In this context, Jesus is the spiritual light that brings hope, wisdom, and guidance to His followers, leading them out of spiritual darkness into the light of salvation. This title also echoes Numbers 24:17 and Revelation 2:28, pointing to Christ as the promised Messiah who brings the dawning of a new day.

Revelation 22:16 reminds believers of Jesus’ authority, His fulfillment of messianic promises, and His role as the light of the world. It encourages us to place our trust in Him and follow His guidance. It also emphasizes the importance of spreading the message of Jesus Christ to the churches and sharing the hope of salvation with others.

Overall, Revelation 22:16 highlights the divinity, authority, and role of Jesus Christ as the root and offspring of David and the bright and morning star. It encourages believers to trust in Him, spread His message, and find hope and guidance in His light.
