Revelation 8:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:21
Listen to this article

“And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.”

Revelation is the last book of the New Testament and contains a series of prophetic visions given to the Apostle John. It is often symbolic and apocalyptic in nature, using vivid imagery to convey spiritual truths.

In this particular verse, we encounter the sounding of the fourth angel. The sounding of the trumpets in the book of Revelation represents divine judgments and events that unfold during the end times. Each trumpet blast introduces a new series of judgments upon the earth.

In this context, the fourth angel’s trumpet blast results in a third of the sun, moon, and stars being smitten or struck. This imagery speaks of a significant darkening of the celestial bodies. The darkening of the sun, moon, and stars is a symbol often associated with judgment, calamity, or a disruption of the natural order.

This verse is reminiscent of similar prophecies found in the Old Testament, such as Isaiah 13:10 and Joel 2:31. These passages use similar language to describe cosmic disturbances as signs of God’s impending judgment and the end times.

The darkening of the celestial bodies may carry both literal and symbolic meanings. It could signify literal cosmic events or natural disasters that will occur during the end times. However, it can also have a deeper spiritual meaning, representing the spiritual darkness and upheaval that will prevail during this period.

The darkening of the sun, moon, and stars could symbolize a loss of light, truth, and guidance in the world. It may indicate the spiritual and moral decay that will be prevalent during the end times. This darkness serves as a warning and a sign of the divine judgment that will come upon the earth.

Overall, Revelation 8:12 points to a time of divine judgment, disruption, and darkness. It reminds believers to be vigilant and spiritually prepared for the events that will unfold during the end times. It encourages us to seek God, hold fast to our faith, and rely on His guidance and protection even in the midst of tumultuous times.

As with all passages in the book of Revelation, it is important to approach the text with humility, recognizing the symbolic and apocalyptic nature of the writing. It is a book that invites deep reflection and study, requiring careful interpretation to grasp its intended message.
