“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

Context:To understand any verse in its entirety, it’s crucial to consider its context. In Romans 10, Paul is discussing the salvation of both Jews and Gentiles and how faith in Jesus Christ is the means of salvation for all. He emphasises that salvation is accessible to anyone who believes in their heart and confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10).

Faith and Hearing:Paul states that faith comes by hearing. Here, “hearing” refers to hearing the Word of God, specifically the message of the Gospel. The Word of God is powerful and transformative, capable of producing faith in the hearts of those who hear it. The Gospel message about Jesus Christ and His redemptive work is the foundation for faith.

The Word of God:The Word of God is the primary source through which faith is engendered. It encompasses both the written Word (Scriptures) and the spoken Word (preaching and teaching). The Scriptures contain God’s revelation to humanity and reveal His character, plan of salvation, and His promises. Through the Scriptures, we gain knowledge and understanding of God’s truth, which in turn produces faith.

Active Participation:Faith is not merely an intellectual exercise but requires active participation. Hearing the Word of God implies an attentive and receptive posture. It involves more than mere auditory perception; it requires an openness to receiving and accepting the truth presented in God’s Word. Genuine faith responds with trust and obedience to the message proclaimed.

The Importance of Faith:Paul’s emphasis on faith reflects its central role in salvation. Faith is the means by which individuals appropriate the gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). It is through faith that we establish a personal relationship with God and experience His transformative power in our lives.

Application:Romans 10:17 reminds believers of the importance of consistently engaging with the Word of God. Regularly hearing, reading, and studying the Scriptures deepens our understanding of God’s truth, builds our faith, and equips us to walk in obedience. It encourages us to actively participate in the life of faith, continually seeking God’s Word and aligning our lives with its teachings.

  • In conclusion:Romans 10:17 emphasises the vital role of faith in our relationship with God. It highlights the connection between faith and the Word of God, underscoring the transformative power of the Scriptures. By hearing and actively engaging with the Word, our faith is nurtured, strengthened, and deepened, enabling us to walk in obedience and experience the abundant life offered through Jesus Christ.
