Romans 13:2

Listen to this article

“Whosoever, therefore, resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider its context. In the preceding verses, the apostle Paul is discussing the role of governing authorities and how Christians should relate to them. He encourages believers to submit to governing authorities because they have been established by God. Now, let’s explore the verse in more detail: 2. Submission to authority: The verse begins with the statement that resisting the power or authority established by God is equivalent to resisting the ordinance of God. Here, “the power” refers to the governing authorities. The Bible teaches that all authority ultimately comes from God, and He establishes governments to maintain order and promote justice in society (Romans 13:1).

Resisting authority:The verse cautions against resisting or rebelling against those in positions of authority. By doing so, individuals go against the established order and, in essence, rebel against God’s appointed structure. It’s important to note that this verse is not advocating blind obedience to any authority, but rather addressing the general principle of submission to governing authorities.

Consequences of resistance:The verse warns that those who resist or rebel against the established authority will “receive to themselves damnation.” This can be understood as a consequence or judgment that individuals bring upon themselves. While the word “damnation” may sound severe, it signifies judgment or condemnation rather than necessarily referring to eternal damnation. It emphasizes the potential negative consequences of resisting authority.

Balance and discernment:It’s crucial to interpret this verse in light of the broader teachings of the Bible. While Christians are called to submit to governing authorities, there may be instances where civil disobedience is warranted when human laws conflict with God’s commands (e.g., Acts 5:27-29). Discernment and wisdom are necessary to navigate such situations while keeping the principles of love, justice, and righteousness in mind.

Application:In our daily lives, Romans 13:2 reminds us of the importance of respecting and submitting to the authorities appointed over us. This includes government leaders, employers, and other forms of authority in various realms of life. By doing so, we demonstrate obedience to God’s ordained order and contribute to the stability and well-being of society.

  • Remember, a comprehensive study of any verse should involve further examination of the surrounding context, cross-referencing with other relevant biblical passages, and considering different interpretations.
  • It’s also beneficial to seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders and engage in prayerful reflection when studying God’s Word.
