Romans 15:13

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular chapter, Paul is exhorting the strong believers to bear with the weaknesses of the weak and to seek the edification and unity of the church. In verse 13, Paul concludes his exhortation with a prayer for the believers, expressing his desire for them to experience the fullness of joy, peace, and hope through their faith in God.

“Now the God of hope”:Paul refers to God as the “God of hope.” This title emphasises that God is the source and foundation of our hope. He is the one who gives us confident expectation and assurance.

“Fill you with all joy and peace”:Paul prays that God would fill the believers with joy and peace. Joy is a deep sense of gladness that comes from knowing and trusting in God, regardless of circumstances. Peace refers to the inner tranquility and well-being that comes from being reconciled with God and having a right relationship with Him.

“In believing”:The joy and peace mentioned above are experienced through believing or having faith in God. Faith in God is not merely intellectual assent but a personal trust and reliance on Him and His promises.

“That ye may abound in hope”:Paul’s desire is that the believers would abound or overflow in hope. Hope is the confident expectation and anticipation of God’s promises and the future fulfilment of His purposes. It is a firm assurance that God will fulfil His word and that His plans are trustworthy.

“Through the power of the Holy Ghost”:The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in filling believers with joy, peace, and hope. The Holy Spirit empowers and enables believers to experience the fullness of these blessings. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives that we can abound in hope.
