Romans 15:7

Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Romans 15:7 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote the book of Romans to the Christian community in Rome, addressing how believers should live together in harmony. The word “wherefore” connects this verse to Paul’s preceding arguments for unity, especially his call for the strong to bear with the weak (Romans 15:1). Here, Paul directly addresses the practical duty of accepting and welcoming one another in the faith.

“Wherefore receive ye one another” uses the word “receive” to mean accept, embrace, or welcome someone into your heart, affections, and fellowship. Paul urges mutual acceptance: the Jew and the Gentile, the strong and the weak, each welcoming the other. This is not a passive tolerance but an active, warm embrace of fellow believers.

“As Christ also received us” provides the ground and pattern for this acceptance. Christ received us not because we were worthy, but out of His love and grace. He took on our nature, bore our sins, and welcomed all who come to Him—sinners, outcasts, and the marginalized. Jesus demonstrated a radical love and acceptance toward all people, regardless of their backgrounds or shortcomings.

“To the glory of God” reveals the purpose of this mutual acceptance. When believers welcome one another as Christ welcomed them, they reflect His character and bring praise to God. The unity and love displayed within the Christian community become a powerful witness to the world, pointing others to Him.

  • Christian unity and fellowship: This verse highlights the importance of unity and fellowship within the body of Christ. Believers are called to welcome and accept one another, regardless of differences in race, social status, or background.

  • Emulating Christ’s example: The verse challenges Christians to imitate Christ’s unconditional acceptance. As recipients of God’s grace, believers are called to extend that same grace and love to others.

  • Reflecting God’s glory: By practicing acceptance and love, believers bring glory to God. The unity and love displayed within the Christian community become a powerful witness to the world.

  • Cultivate a welcoming spirit: Christians should actively seek to create an atmosphere of acceptance and hospitality within their churches and communities, making everyone feel valued and included.

  • Embrace diversity: Recognize and appreciate the diversity of people within the body of Christ. Instead of focusing on differences, celebrate the unique contributions and perspectives that each individual brings.

  • Show Christ-like love: Model Christ’s love by extending grace and acceptance to others, especially those who may be different from you. Practice forgiveness, compassion, and understanding toward others, just as Christ has shown to us.

Romans 15:7 encourages believers to receive one another with love and acceptance, imitating Christ’s example and reflecting God’s glory. By embracing diversity and practicing genuine hospitality, Christians can foster unity and build a community that demonstrates the transformative power of God’s love.
