Romans 15:14
And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
Romans 15:14 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes these words as he brings his letter to the Roman church to a close. The community included both Jewish and Gentile believers, and Paul had just been speaking of his prayers and his desire to visit them. His confident statement here prevents any misunderstanding: he is not implying that they are ignorant or lacking in love. Instead, he affirms his deep, personal conviction about their spiritual condition.
Meaning
By saying, “And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren,” Paul expresses a settled conviction, not a passing hope. The Greek verb conveys a state of being convinced. This persuasion is grounded in his observation of their growth, not in flattery. He then commends them for three qualities. They are “full of goodness,” meaning their character reflects Christ’s love and moral excellence. They are “filled with all knowledge,” indicating a solid grasp of the gospel and its implications, not exhaustive mastery of every subject. And they are “able also to admonish one another,” meaning they can instruct, counsel, and lovingly correct each other for mutual edification.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the broader New Testament teaching on the priesthood of all believers and the mutual responsibility of Christians to build one another up. Paul’s confidence in the Romans shows that a mature church does not depend on an apostle but is equipped to minister to itself.
Application
Paul’s assessment challenges believers to pursue Christ-likeness intentionally. The call to “goodness” invites a continual pursuit of godly character. Being “filled with all knowledge” highlights the importance of diligent study of God’s Word, which equips the church to live according to divine truth. The ability to admonish one another reminds the body of Christ of its communal duty to support, correct, and uplift each other in the journey of faith.
Reflection
Romans 15:14 serves as a powerful reminder of the potential and responsibility each believer holds in contributing to the growth and edification of the whole body of Christ.
