Romans 15:28

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.”

This verse is part of Paul’s letter to the Romans, specifically in the context of his travel plans and ministry. To understand the verse better, it is helpful to consider the broader context of the book of Romans.

The book of Romans is considered one of the most important letters written by the apostle Paul. It addresses various theological and practical aspects of the Christian faith. In the earlier parts of the letter, Paul discusses the righteousness of God, salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in God’s plan of redemption.

In Romans 15, Paul talks about his mission as an apostle to the Gentiles and his desire to visit Rome. He expresses his hope to see the Roman believers and to be supported by them on his journey to Spain. Let’s examine the verse more closely:

“When therefore I have performed this”: Paul is referring to a task or responsibility that he needed to fulfill. In the preceding verses, he discusses his intention to deliver a financial contribution from the Macedonian and Achaian believers to the poor saints in Jerusalem (Romans 15:25-27). Paul considered it important to support the believers in Jerusalem who were undergoing hardships.

“And have sealed to them this fruit”: The phrase “sealed to them this fruit” can be understood as Paul ensuring the safe delivery of the financial gift to the believers in Jerusalem. The “fruit” refers to the offering that was collected from the Gentile churches. By “sealing” the fruit, Paul emphasizes his commitment to fulfilling this responsibility faithfully.

“I will come by you into Spain”: After completing his task in Jerusalem, Paul expresses his intention to visit Rome and then proceed to Spain. It is important to note that Paul’s visit to Rome and his desire to go to Spain were not simply personal ambitions but were part of his missionary strategy to preach the gospel in regions where it had not yet been widely proclaimed.

In this verse, we see Paul’s commitment to carrying out his apostolic mission faithfully and his desire to extend his ministry further into Spain. The verse also highlights Paul’s reliance on the support and partnership of other believers, such as those in Rome, as he pursued his mission.

Overall, Romans 15:28 serves as a reminder of the practical aspects of Paul’s ministry, his dedication to serving the saints in need, and his desire to spread the gospel to new territories. It encourages believers to consider how they can support and participate in the work of God’s kingdom, both locally and globally.
