Romans 15:30

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.”

Context:The book of Romans was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this particular chapter, Paul addresses the importance of unity and mutual edification among believers, both Jews and Gentiles. He encourages them to accept one another and to be considerate of weaker believers. In verse 30, Paul makes a personal request for prayer support from the Roman Christians.

Intercession for the sake of Christ:Paul begins by appealing to the brethren “for the Lord Jesus Christ’s sake.” He emphasizes that their prayers should be motivated by their love and commitment to Jesus Christ. Intercession is a powerful act of love and support for fellow believers and leaders in the faith.

The love of the Spirit:Paul also appeals to the Roman believers “for the love of the Spirit.” This refers to the love that the Holy Spirit has poured into their hearts (Romans 5:5), enabling them to love one another. It is the Spirit’s love working within them that should motivate their prayers on Paul’s behalf.

Striving together in prayer:Paul urges the Roman Christians to “strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.” This phrase highlights the communal nature of prayer. Paul acknowledges the importance of believers joining together in intercession. The word “strive” implies a sense of earnestness, intensity, and persistence in their prayers.

Prayer support for Paul:The apostle Paul, despite his deep faith and unwavering commitment to Christ, recognized his need for the prayers of fellow believers. He sought their support in his ministry endeavours, knowing that the prayers of the saints are a powerful force in advancing the Kingdom of God.

Application:Romans 15:30 teaches us several important lessons. First, we should be willing to intercede for one another out of love for Jesus Christ and by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Second, our prayers should be marked by a sense of unity and togetherness, striving together with fellow believers in prayer. Third, even strong and mature believers, like Paul, benefit from the prayers of others. We should not hesitate to seek prayer support from our brothers and sisters in Christ when we need it.

  • In conclusion:Romans 15:30 highlights the importance of intercession, unity, and support among believers. It encourages us to pray earnestly for one another, motivated by our love for Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. May we strive together in prayer, supporting and uplifting one another in our walk of faith.
