Romans 15:32
That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed.
Romans 15:32 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote this letter to the church in Rome, expressing his desire to visit them and share the gospel. In Romans 15, he asks the believers to pray for his deliverance from unbelievers in Judea and for his service to the saints in Jerusalem. This verse is the goal of that request: that he might come to them with joy by the will of God and be refreshed together with them.
Meaning
Paul’s longing to come “with joy” reveals his genuine affection for the Roman believers and his desire to strengthen their faith. The phrase “by the will of God” shows his humility and dependence on God’s sovereignty over all his plans and journeys. Being “refreshed” together points to the mutual benefit of Christian fellowship, where both Paul and the Romans would find renewal and encouragement in their shared faith.
Biblical connections
This verse reflects the New Testament emphasis on mutual encouragement within the body of Christ, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, where believers are urged to build one another up.
Application
Romans 15:32 teaches us to prioritize joyful fellowship with other believers. Investing time in building relationships with fellow Christians brings joy and spiritual growth. It also encourages us to seek and submit to God’s will in our plans, aligning our desires with His purposes. Finally, it reminds us of the importance of mutual refreshment: as we support and encourage one another, we create an environment that strengthens and uplifts all believers.
Reflection
Consider your own plans and relationships. Do you invite others to pray for your journeys and decisions? Do you look forward to being refreshed by fellow believers? Let Paul’s example inspire you to depend on God’s will and cherish the gift of Christian community.
