Romans 16:12

Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord.

Romans 16:12 (KJV)

The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Rome. In this chapter, Paul concludes his letter by sending greetings to various individuals in the church in Rome.

Paul sends greetings to Tryphena and Tryphosa, who are described as labouring in the Lord. Their Greek names suggest they may have been sisters or close relatives. The word “labour” implies toil and effort, indicating active, ongoing service in the Christian community. Paul also greets Persis, whom he calls “beloved,” and notes that she “laboured much in the Lord,” suggesting extensive and diligent work. These women were likely involved in ministry, possibly as deaconesses or in other forms of service, contributing to the growth of the church.

The recognition of women in ministry here aligns with Paul’s teachings in other epistles where he acknowledges the important role of women in spreading the Gospel and serving in various capacities.

The emphasis on laboring in the Lord highlights the significance of active participation and dedication in serving God. As believers, we are called to use our gifts and talents for the glory of God and the benefit of others. Serving the Lord requires effort, commitment, and perseverance.

Paul’s greeting to these women serves as an encouragement and affirmation of their work. It reminds us of the importance of recognizing and appreciating the efforts of fellow believers who labor in the Lord. We should express gratitude and encouragement to those who serve faithfully, as it strengthens their commitment and inspires others to join in the work of the ministry.

Paul’s personal greetings demonstrate the value of every member’s contribution in the Christian community. The mention of Tryphena, Tryphosa, and Persis highlights the involvement and contribution of women in the early church, indicating that they had significant roles in ministry and were recognized for their service.
