Ruth 1:7

Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

Ruth 1:7 (KJV)

The book of Ruth is a narrative in the Old Testament set during the time of the judges, a period often marked by spiritual decline. Ruth 1:7 comes after Naomi has lost her husband and two sons while living in Moab. Hearing that the Lord has visited His people with bread, she decides to leave Moab and return to her homeland, the land of Judah. This verse records the moment she sets out with her two daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah, beginning the journey that shapes the rest of the story.

The verse shows Naomi taking a decisive step. She does not remain in a place of grief and emptiness but moves toward the land of promise. The phrase “went forth out of the place where she was” marks a clear break from her past circumstances. Her two daughters-in-law choose to accompany her, demonstrating their loyalty and the close bond formed through shared loss. The journey is both physical and spiritual, as returning to Judah also means returning to the people of God and the hope of His provision.

The return to the land of Judah connects to the covenantal promises given to Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, the land is a sign of God’s faithfulness to His people. Naomi’s return foreshadows God’s redemptive work, as Ruth’s loyalty leads her to become an ancestor of King David and ultimately of Jesus Christ. The journey from Moab to Bethlehem, though small in scale, becomes part of the larger story of redemption. This verse also echoes the biblical theme of God working through ordinary human decisions and relationships to accomplish His purposes.

Ruth 1:7 encourages believers to stand by loved ones in times of hardship. Naomi, Ruth, and Orpah face an uncertain future, yet they begin the journey together. This teaches the value of companionship and mutual support during grief and transition. It also reminds us that God can work through our choices, even when the path ahead is unclear. Like Naomi, we may need to leave familiar but painful places and trust God to provide in new circumstances.

This verse invites readers to consider their own journeys of faith. Who accompanies us in difficult times, and whom do we choose to walk alongside? The faithfulness of these women stands out against the spiritual decline of their era, showing that devotion to family and to God can shine even in dark days. Their simple act of setting out together becomes a foundation for the unfolding of God’s grace, reminding us that small steps of obedience can lead to unexpected blessings.
