Titus 3:1

Listen to this article

“Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work.”

Context:Titus is one of the Pastoral Epistles written by the Apostle Paul to his younger colleague, Titus. In this letter, Paul provides instructions for appointing elders, maintaining order in the church, and promoting godly behaviour among believers.

Submission to Authorities:The verse begins by emphasising the importance of believers being subject to “principalities and powers.” This refers to the governmental authorities and rulers of the land. Christians are called to submit to those in authority, recognising that they are established by God (Romans 13:1).

Obedience to Magistrates:Paul further instructs Titus to remind the believers to obey the magistrates. Magistrates refer to officials or officers who are responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining order within a society. Christians are called to be law-abiding citizens and to respect and submit to those in positions of authority.

Readiness for Good Works:The verse concludes by urging believers to be ready for every good work. This means being prepared and eager to engage in acts of kindness, service, and righteousness. Christians should actively seek opportunities to do good to others, reflecting the character of Christ and being a blessing to their communities.

Application:Titus 3:1 highlights the Christian’s responsibility to live in obedience to both God and earthly authorities. Here are some key points for personal application:

  • Submission:Are you willingly submitting to the authorities in your life, whether in the government, workplace, or church? Reflect on your attitude and actions towards those in authority.
  • Obedience:Are you actively obeying the laws and regulations set forth by the governing authorities? As a Christian, it is essential to demonstrate integrity and obedience in your interactions with the legal systems of your country.
  • Good Works:Are you eagerly seeking opportunities to do good works? Take time to consider how you can practically serve and bless others in your community, church, or workplace.

Remember, the ultimate motivation for our submission, obedience, and good works is our love for God and our desire to reflect His character in the world.
