Titus 3:2

To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Context

Paul wrote these words to Titus, a young pastor on the island of Crete, to guide the conduct of believers in a society where slander and quarrelling were common. The instruction follows the call to be ready to every good work and to show proper respect toward all, especially those in authority. This verse, then, is not isolated advice but part of a larger picture of Christian witness before unbelieving neighbours.

Meaning

The command to speak evil of no man translates the Greek word blasphēmein, which means to slander, revile, or defame. This prohibition is universal: it applies to fellow believers, to unbelievers, and even to magistrates and those in authority. It forbids malicious speech, gossip, and backbiting, and instead calls for kindness, respect, and love toward all people.

The word translated brawlers means fighters, and it forbids both physical violence and verbal quarrelsomeness. Christians are not to be litigious, contentious, or quick to argue. Instead, they are to be peacemakers who resolve disputes calmly and maintain unity within the church.

The positive virtues follow: gentle, from the Greek epieikēs, means fair, considerate, and forbearing. Meekness, from praotēs, is not weakness but a humble, mild disposition that does not insist on its own rights. This meekness is to be shown unto all men, making its scope universal and not selective.

Application

Believers are called to guard their tongues, refusing to speak evil of anyone, even when provoked. They are to avoid quarrels and instead pursue peace, showing gentleness and meekness to all people, regardless of how others may treat them. This behaviour is a powerful testimony to the grace of God and helps create a harmonious, Christ-centred community.

Consider how your words and actions reflect the character of Christ. Do you speak evil of others, or do you extend the same kindness and respect that you have received from God? Ask the Holy Spirit to cultivate in you a gentle and meek spirit, so that your life may be ready to every good work and bring glory to God.
