Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Context
Paul wrote this letter to Titus, his fellow worker, who was overseeing the church in Crete. In this verse, Paul explains the nature of salvation and the roles of God’s mercy, regeneration, and the Holy Spirit. He addresses believers who needed to understand that their salvation rests entirely on God’s initiative, not on human effort.
Meaning
Paul begins by stating that salvation is not based on our own works of righteousness. No amount of good deeds or religious rituals can earn it. Instead, it is solely by God’s mercy that we are saved. God extends His grace and favour to us, not because we deserve it, but out of His great love and compassion.
The phrase “washing of regeneration” refers to the cleansing and renewal that God performs in salvation. The Greek word for washing (λουτροῦ) points to a divine act of cleansing from sin, while regeneration (παλιγγενεσίας) means the new birth or spiritual rebirth. When we repent and place our faith in Jesus Christ, our sins are washed away, and we are born again by the Holy Spirit. This regeneration brings about a new life in Christ and a change in our nature.
The “renewing of the Holy Ghost” (ἀνακαινώσεως πνεύματος ἁγίου) is the ongoing work of the Spirit in the believer’s life. Once we are saved, the Holy Spirit dwells within us and begins the process of renewing and transforming us from the inside out. The Spirit empowers us to live a godly life, conforming us to the image of Christ, and producing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
