Titus 3:3
“For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.”
Background and Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Titus, a letter addressed to Titus, his fellow worker and a leader in the early Christian church. The letter offers guidance and instructions for the young pastor in Crete, a Mediterranean island. In this verse, Paul emphasizes the state of humanity before coming to faith in Christ.
Spiritual Condition before Conversion:Titus 3:3 describes the sinful condition that all people, including believers, once found themselves in before coming to know Christ. Paul lists various negative characteristics to highlight the spiritual state of people apart from God. These include foolishness, disobedience, deception, serving worldly desires, living in malice and envy, and harboring hatred toward others.
Awareness of Our Past Condition:By acknowledging the former state of believers, Paul reminds them of their need for God’s grace. God’s Transforming Work:Titus 3:4-7 continues by highlighting God’s redemptive work in our lives: “But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” God, in His kindness, reveals His love and saves us by His mercy, not based on our own righteous deeds.
Transformation and New Life:As believers, we are not defined by our past sins but by the transformative work of the Holy Spirit within us. Through Christ, we experience regeneration, symbolized by the “washing of regeneration” and the renewal of the Holy Spirit. This process brings about a radical change in our lives, enabling us to live in accordance with God’s will and purpose.
Unity and Love:By acknowledging our past sinful condition, we gain a deeper appreciation for the love and grace extended to us. As recipients of God’s mercy, we are called to extend the same love and grace to others. Rather than harboring hate and envy, we are to demonstrate love, forgiveness, and unity within the body of Christ.
