Zechariah 6:7
And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.
Zechariah 6:7 (KJV)
Context
Zechariah prophesied to the people of Israel as they returned from exile in Babylon, offering encouragement, correction, and hope. This verse belongs to a series of visions that also point forward to the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. The vision of four chariots in Zechariah 6:1-8 provides the immediate setting, with the bay horse among those sent out from between two mountains of bronze.
Meaning
The bay horse goes forth, seeking to walk to and fro through the earth, and at God’s command it does so. This action suggests thoroughness, vigilance, and the idea that God’s agents move throughout the earth to observe and enact His purposes. The color bay—a mixture of reddish-brown or chestnut hues—can symbolize strength and power, and the horse’s eagerness to patrol the earth signifies the swift and comprehensive execution of God’s will.
Biblical connections
In Zechariah 6:1-8, the four chariots come out from between two mountains of bronze, and the horses are sent to execute God’s judgment upon the nations. The north country is specifically mentioned in verse 8, where the going forth of the chariots brings rest to God’s spirit, indicating that His judgment is complete and satisfying to Him. Later in the chapter, Joshua the high priest is crowned, symbolizing the coming Branch who will build the temple and reign as both priest and king (Zechariah 6:9-13). Thus, the vision of the chariots is not only about judgment but also points to the establishment of God’s kingdom through the Messiah.
Application
This verse reminds believers that God’s presence and oversight extend to every corner of the earth. The horses operate under His command, illustrating His power and authority to bring about His will. Believers can take confidence in God’s providential care, knowing that His purposes are actively accomplished throughout the world.
Reflection
The bay horse’s eager obedience challenges us to respond to God’s call with readiness and willingness. Just as the horse sought to go and then walked to and fro through the earth, we are invited to participate in God’s work, trusting that He who sends also empowers and oversees the mission.
