1 Chronicles 24:26

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The sonnes of Merari were Mahli and Mushi: the sonnes of Iaaziah, Beno. 1 Chronicles 24:26 (KJV)

The sons of Merari

were Mahli and Mushi: the sons of Jaaziah; Beno. 1 Chronicles 24:26 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is an Old Testament historical record that traces the genealogy and lineage of Israel, emphasizing the organization of the Levitical priesthood. Chapter 24 details the divisions of the Levitical priests appointed by King David, and verse 26 specifically names the sons of Merari and the sons of Jaaziah.

Understanding the Levitical Priesthood

In the Old Testament the tribe of Levi was set apart for religious service. Within Levi the family of Aaron served as high priests, while the other Levites assisted in worship, sacrifices, and the upkeep of the Tabernacle (later the Temple). The Levites were divided into distinct clans, each entrusted with particular duties.

The Sons of Merari

Merari was one of Levi’s three sons, the others being Gershon and Kohath (1 Chronicles 6:1‑2). The Merarite descendants were charged with the maintenance and transportation of the Tabernacle’s framework, pillars, boards, sockets, and related components (Numbers 3:33‑37). The two sons of Merari mentioned in this verse are Mahli and Mushi. Their families represented significant clans within the Merarite division and were assigned specific responsibilities in the service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple.

The Sons of Jaaziah

The verse also records the sons of Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. While the biblical record provides limited detail about these individuals, their inclusion reflects the comprehensive nature of the priestly organization. Beno is the only name highlighted in some translations, but the fuller list underscores the breadth of families involved in worship.

Organization and Order

This passage highlights the importance of orderly structure in worship. By dividing the Levitical priests into families and assigning clear tasks, Israel ensured that every aspect of temple service was performed efficiently and faithfully.

Faithful Service

The sons of Merari and Jaaziah fulfilled their priestly roles with dedication. Their example reminds believers that whatever task or role we are given in God’s service, we are called to perform it with faithfulness and diligence.

God’s Plan in Details

Even names that seem obscure have purpose in God’s overarching plan. The inclusion of every individual, no matter how briefly mentioned, demonstrates that God’s work encompasses every person and every detail of His service.

Though the specific activities of Jaaziah’s sons are not fully recorded, the broader principles of order, responsibility, and faithful devotion emerge clearly from this brief verse, offering timeless insight for today’s believers.
