1 Corinthians 7:38

Posted on 18 May at 11:34
Listen to this article

“So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.”

Context:First, let’s understand the context of this verse. In the preceding verses, the apostle Paul addresses the topic of marriage and singleness, providing advice and guidance to the Corinthians. In verse 38, Paul discusses the decision of whether to give a woman in marriage or not.

The verse can be divided into two parts:

a) “So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well”: This part suggests that if someone decides to give a woman in marriage, they are doing what is acceptable or good. It acknowledges the validity and appropriateness of marriage.

b) “but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better”: This part indicates that refraining from giving a woman in marriage is considered even better. It suggests that remaining unmarried or choosing a life of celibacy is a higher calling and carries certain advantages.

Interpretation:This verse reflects Paul’s personal opinion and his belief that remaining single can allow individuals to devote themselves more fully to serving God. However, it is essential to note that Paul recognizes both marriage and singleness as valid options. Elsewhere in his writings, he acknowledges that marriage is honourable and a God-given institution.

It’s crucial to consider the broader context of the passage and the cultural context of the time when interpreting this verse. Paul was writing to a specific audience in Corinth, which was grappling with various issues related to marriage, sexuality, and the cultural expectations of that time.

Application:

  • Application:The application of this verse can be understood in light of the principle that God has given individuals different gifts and callings. Some may be called to marriage, while others may be called to singleness. It is essential to discern one’s own calling and seek God’s guidance in making decisions regarding marriage or remaining single.

For those considering marriage, it is essential to approach it with honour, love, and commitment, as other passages in the Bible emphasise. Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman.

For those choosing a life of singleness or celibacy, it can provide an opportunity for undivided devotion to God and service to others. Singleness should not be seen as a lesser state but rather as a unique calling to be embraced with purpose and dedication.

Ultimately, 1 Corinthians 7:38 reminds us that both marriage and singleness have their merits, and the decision should be made prayerfully, considering one’s own circumstances and God’s guidance.

Remember that a holistic understanding of biblical teachings on marriage, singleness, and relationships can be gleaned by examining the entirety of Scripture and seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders.
