1 Kings 2:7
But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
1 Kings 2:7 (KJV)
Context
King David speaks these words near the end of his life, giving final instructions to his son Solomon. David remembers how Barzillai the Gileadite helped him when he fled from Absalom’s rebellion. Barzillai and his household brought food and supplies to David during that dangerous time (2 Samuel 17:27-29). Now David commands Solomon to show kindness to Barzillai’s sons.
Meaning
The word “kindness” here carries the Hebrew sense of loyal, covenant-like love (hesed). It is not mere politeness but faithful, committed care. David asks Solomon to let Barzillai’s sons eat at the king’s table, a place of honor, provision, and protection. This act publicly recognizes their father’s loyalty and extends favor to the next generation. It is a direct response to past faithfulness, showing that David did not forget those who stood by him in crisis.
Biblical connections
David had earlier invited Barzillai himself to live in Jerusalem, but Barzillai, being old, declined and asked that his son Chimham receive the favor instead (2 Samuel 19:31-38). This verse fulfills that request. Eating at the king’s table was a sign of royal care, as seen with Mephibosheth in 2 Samuel 9. The surrounding verses in 1 Kings 2 contrast this mercy with the judgment due to Joab and Shimei, showing that David distinguished between the faithful and the treacherous. This command also establishes a pattern for Solomon’s reign, blending justice with mercy.
Application
This verse teaches gratitude in action. David did not forget those who stood by him in crisis. Believers are called to remember and honor those who have shown loyalty, especially when it costs them something. It also encourages passing on blessings to the next generation, ensuring that faithful service is not overlooked. Godly leaders should care for those who helped them, and this principle applies to every believer.
Reflection
Loyalty shown to God’s servant is remembered and rewarded. The command to show kindness reflects God’s own faithful love toward His people. As David provided for Barzillai’s sons, so God cares for those who serve Him. This verse invites readers to examine their own gratitude and commitment, and to trust that no act of faithfulness is forgotten by God.
