1 Kings Chapter 13

Summery

1 Kings 13 tells the story of a prophet sent by God to deliver a message to King Jeroboam of Israel. As the prophet traveled to the king's altar in Bethel, he encountered an older prophet who lived in the same city. The older prophet invited the younger one to dine with him, but God had commanded the younger prophet not to eat or drink in the land.

The younger prophet initially refused, but the older prophet deceived him, claiming that an angel had told him it was okay to eat and drink. Believing the lie, the younger prophet ate and drank with the older prophet. Suddenly, the word of God came to the older prophet, rebuking him for his deception and declaring that the younger prophet would die and be buried with his fathers.

After the meal, the younger prophet continued his journey but was killed by a lion on his way home. The lion did not harm the prophet's donkey or disrupt his body. The older prophet found the dead body and mourned for the younger prophet, instructing his sons to bury him in his own tomb. The older prophet acknowledged the younger prophet's authenticity and declared that his message from God about the altar in Bethel would come to pass.
