2 Chronicles 9:1

And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.

2 Chronicles 9:1 (KJV)

This verse opens the account of the queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem. The earlier chapters of 2 Chronicles describe Solomon’s reign, showing the wisdom and wealth that God gave him. His fame spread far beyond Israel, reaching the queen in her distant land. Sheba was a kingdom in the area of present-day Ethiopia or Yemen, known for its trade and riches.

The queen came to “prove” Solomon with “hard questions,” meaning she wanted to test his wisdom with difficult riddles or problems. This was not a casual visit. She brought a very great company, camels carrying spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. Her costly gifts showed that she honored Solomon and considered this meeting important. When she arrived, she “communed with him of all that was in her heart,” which means she spoke openly and fully, holding nothing back.

The parallel account in 1 Kings 10:1-2 adds that she came to test Solomon “concerning the name of the LORD.” This connects her search for wisdom to the God who gave Solomon his wisdom. Her visit was not only about human fame; it pointed to the source of Solomon’s greatness.

Like the queen, we may come to God with hard questions and honest doubts. We can bring everything in our hearts, knowing that true wisdom comes from Him. Her example encourages us to seek truth earnestly and to honor those whom God has gifted.

Consider what is in your heart today. Are you willing to bring your deepest questions to God, trusting that He gives wisdom generously? The queen’s journey reminds us that seeking wisdom is worthy of great effort and sacrifice.
