2 Peter 1:10

Listen to this article

“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall”

Context:The book of 2 Peter was written by the apostle Peter, likely near the end of his life, to encourage and exhort the believers in the face of false teachers and to remind them of the importance of living godly lives. In this particular verse, Peter urges the believers to be diligent in confirming their calling and election in Christ.

Calling and Election:Peter refers to the calling and election of the believers. The “calling” refers to God’s invitation and summoning of individuals into a relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:30, Ephesians 4:1). “Election” refers to God’s choice and predestination of believers to be part of His redeemed people (Romans 9:11, Ephesians 1:4-5). It is important to note that this calling and election are the work of God’s grace and not based on our own merits.

Making Your Calling and Election Sure:Peter encourages believers to give diligence to make their calling and election sure. This means actively seeking to grow in faith, knowledge, and godly character. It involves living out the Christian life with dedication and perseverance. It is not about doubting or questioning one’s salvation but rather about affirming and strengthening it.

Diligence:The word “diligence” emphasizes the importance of intentional effort, persistence, and earnestness. Believers are called to actively pursue spiritual growth, cultivate their relationship with God, and live in accordance with His teachings. Diligence involves seeking God through prayer, studying His Word, fellowship with other believers, and living a life of obedience and holiness.

Assurance and Security:Peter assures believers that if they diligently pursue these things, they will never fall. This does not mean they will never stumble or face challenges, but rather that they will be spiritually secure and steadfast in their faith. The diligence in confirming their calling and election helps believers grow in their relationship with God, deepen their faith, and become more resilient in the face of trials and temptations.

Application:This verse challenges believers to examine their own lives and assess the level of diligence they are putting into their spiritual growth. It prompts us to ask ourselves if we are actively seeking to strengthen our relationship with God, if we are growing in faith, and if our lives reflect the transformation that comes through Christ. It reminds us that our salvation is secure in Christ, but it also encourages us to continually pursue a deeper and more vibrant walk with Him.

In conclusion, 2 Peter 1:10 urges believers to be diligent in confirming their calling and election in Christ. It emphasizes the importance of actively seeking to grow in faith and godly character, and it assures believers of the security and steadfastness they can experience as they pursue a deeper relationship with God.
