2 Peter 1:2

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

2 Peter 1:2 (KJV)

The apostle Peter wrote this second epistle to early Christians who faced false teachers and needed encouragement to live godly lives while awaiting Christ’s return. This verse opens the letter as a greeting, yet it also introduces the central theme: knowing God and Jesus Christ personally.

Peter’s greeting combines two rich biblical words. Grace is God’s unmerited favour and blessing, His love, forgiveness, and salvation given through Jesus Christ. Peace is the inner tranquility and harmony that come from being rightly related to God through that grace.

Peter prays that grace and peace would be “multiplied” to his readers. This is not mere addition but abundant increase. While God’s love itself never changes, the experience of His favour can grow as believers discover more of His character and receive a larger measure of the Spirit’s work in their lives.

The means of this multiplication is “the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” This knowledge is not merely intellectual information. It is personal and experiential, gained through faith in Christ and ongoing spiritual growth. As believers know God more deeply, His grace and peace increase in their daily experience.

This greeting echoes the pattern of other New Testament epistles, where grace and peace are invoked as foundational blessings. Yet Peter ties them directly to knowing Jesus, who is the source of salvation, forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life.

Grace and peace are not static possessions but blessings meant to grow. They expand as believers devote themselves to knowing God through Scripture, prayer, and obedience. The more intimately they know Christ, the more His grace and peace fill their lives.

Peter’s greeting invites every believer to pursue a deeper, experiential knowledge of God and Jesus Christ. Such knowledge is the channel through which divine blessings flow, bringing stability and growth in the Christian life.
