2 Peter 3:3 (KJV)

The apostle Peter wrote this second letter to believers scattered across various regions, encouraging them in their faith and warning them about false teachers and their destructive influence. In chapter 3, Peter turns to the return of Jesus Christ and the skepticism surrounding His second coming. This verse introduces that discussion by preparing readers for the opposition they will face.

Peter begins with the phrase “Knowing this first,” signaling that what follows is foundational. He wants his readers to grasp this truth before considering anything else. The Greek term translated “scoffers” refers to those who ridicule and deride the teachings of Christianity and the concept of Christ’s return. These individuals are described as “walking after their own lusts,” meaning they follow their own sinful desires and passions rather than God’s will.

The “last days” refer to the period between Christ’s first and second coming, encompassing the time from the early church to His return. Peter predicts the emergence of such scoffers during this era, and their presence serves as a fulfillment of prophetic Scripture. This prediction is consistent with other New Testament warnings about the last days, such as those found in 1 Timothy 4:1-2 and 2 Timothy 3:1, which also describe a departure from sound doctrine and an increase in ungodliness.

The scoffers’ behavior is characterized by making light of sin, openly committing it, and even glorying in it, while also mocking religion and those who are most religious. The just and upright person is commonly laughed to scorn by such individuals. Their existence should not be surprising or discouraging to believers. Instead, it serves as a reminder of the opposition and challenges faced by the Christian faith.

Peter’s use of the phrase “Knowing this first” emphasizes the need for believers to be aware and discerning. Understanding the presence of scoffers and their motives equips Christians to stand firm in their faith and respond with wisdom. The mention of scoffers who walk after their own lusts highlights the contrast between the worldly values of self-indulgence and the call to live a life aligned with God’s will.

As believers, we can draw strength from the fact that the Bible has foretold the presence of scoffers in the last days. When faced with doubt or ridicule, we can hold fast to the truth of God’s Word and trust in the certainty of Christ’s return. It is crucial for Christians to have a solid foundation of knowledge regarding biblical teachings and prophecies. This knowledge enables us to recognize false teachings and ideologies that contradict the Gospel, and respond with love, truth, and grace.

In a world driven by self-gratification and sinful desires, we are called to live differently. By aligning our lives with God’s Word, we can be a testament to the transforming power of Christ and draw others to Him. Believers are encouraged to resist the pressures of the world and pursue righteousness and godliness.

Peter’s warning is not meant to frighten believers but to prepare them. The presence of scoffers is a sign of the last days and a confirmation that God’s prophetic Word is true. When we encounter mockery or opposition, we can remember that Scripture foretold this reality. Our response should be marked by steadfast faith, growing discernment, and a life that reflects the holiness to which we are called.
