Listen to this article

“That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour.”

Context:The Apostle Peter wrote the Second Epistle of Peter as a letter to the early Christian church. In this particular verse, Peter is reminding the believers to be mindful of the words spoken by the holy prophets in the Old Testament and the commandments given by the apostles.

The Importance of Remembrance:Peter emphasizes the importance of remembering the teachings of the prophets and apostles. This implies that there is a danger of forgetting or neglecting these truths, which can lead to spiritual apathy or false teachings. By being mindful of these words, believers can stay rooted in the truth and be guarded against deception.

The Holy Prophets:The reference to the holy prophets points to the Old Testament scriptures. Throughout the Old Testament, God raised up prophets to speak on His behalf, delivering messages of warning, rebuke, and future promises. Peter encourages the readers to remember the words spoken by these prophets, acknowledging their significance in understanding God’s plan and purpose.

The Commandment of the Apostles:The apostles, including Peter himself, were chosen by Jesus Christ and entrusted with the task of spreading His teachings and establishing the early church. Their teachings carried divine authority and were considered as commandments from the Lord. Peter urges the believers to pay heed to the instructions given by the apostles, recognizing their authority and relevance for Christian living.

Application for Today:The instruction in this verse is not only relevant to the early church but also applies to believers today. We are encouraged to study and meditate on the words of the holy prophets in the Old Testament and the teachings of the apostles in the New Testament. By doing so, we gain a deeper understanding of God’s redemptive plan, His character, and the principles by which we are to live.

Guarding Against False Teachings:The study of Scripture helps us discern truth from error. In a world where false teachings and ideologies abound, being mindful of God’s Word enables us to identify and reject false doctrines. By maintaining a solid foundation in the teachings of the prophets and apostles, we can defend our faith and remain steadfast in the truth.

In conclusion, 2 Peter 3:2 encourages believers to remember and be mindful of the words spoken by the holy prophets in the Old Testament and the commandments given by the apostles. By studying and reflecting on these teachings, we gain a deeper understanding of God’s plan and purpose, guard against false teachings, and live in obedience to the Lord.
