2 Samuel 23:34
Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,
2 Samuel 23:34 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the closing list of David’s mighty men, the warriors who served him faithfully. The list appears near the end of 2 Samuel, after David’s final words. It honors those who helped establish his kingdom. These men came from varied backgrounds, showing that God used many kinds of people to support David.
Meaning
Two men are named here. Eliphelet is the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite. The Maachathites came from Maacah, a region near the northern border of Israel. Eliam is the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite. Gilo was a town in the hill country of Judah. These details show that David’s warriors came from different places and families. The genealogical records preserved their memory for future generations.
Eliam’s father, Ahithophel, was David’s trusted counselor. Later, Ahithophel joined Absalom’s rebellion against David (2 Samuel 15:12). Yet his son Eliam remained among David’s loyal men. This shows that a person’s family does not decide his own faithfulness. Even those connected to a traitor could serve faithfully.
Biblical connections
Some Jewish traditions identify Eliam as the father of Bathsheba, though the Bible does not say this directly. If true, this would connect Eliam to the events of 2 Samuel 11. The text itself does not confirm it, so we should treat it as uncertain.
Application
This genealogy reminds us that God values faithful service, even when a person’s story is brief. Not every servant of God is famous. Many support leaders quietly and faithfully. Their names may appear only once in Scripture, but their work mattered.
It also teaches that loyalty to God and to his chosen leader is a personal choice. Eliam served David even though his father turned against the king. Our own decisions can honor God regardless of our family background.
Reflection
God sees and remembers those who serve him faithfully. This verse encourages us to remain loyal to God’s purposes, even when our role seems small. Our names may not be written in a famous list, but they are written in God’s book of life.
